Bahru Stainless, Tanjung Langsat, Johor

The Bahru Stainless Project began in 2009, involving construction of a $310 million integrated production plant on a 142-hectare site with direct access to the sea. When completed, the development will include a cold rolling mill, a cold annealing and pickling line, auxiliary lines, a laboratory, and an electricity substation.

The plant is being built in several stages through a collaboration between three major corporations: Acerinox, which owns a 67 percent stake; Nisshin Steel with 30 percent; and Metal One with 3 percent.

The Client

AME Construction Sdn Bhd and Repute Construction Sdn Bhd were appointed by Bahru Stainless Sdn Bhd to build the plant. The companies have long experience in the Malaysian construction industry. Having demonstrated the required expertise and capabilities, Holcim was appointed as their partner for this project.

The Challenge

Speed of execution was the main challenge, necessitating precise logistical planning and management, as well as a consistent supply of highquality concrete.

Holcim’s Solution

Careful planning and management of supply delivery contributed to the project’s timely completion. Holcim was able to meet the contractors’ special requirements, as well as other solutions:

  • Due to the project’s location close to the sea, selected structures needed sulphateresistant concrete. Holcim specially formulated the required products.
  • Ensuring deliveries were always on time, Holcim modified production according to varying demands.
